This is Ecovillage Madeira's own reference page. It says what we are, who is behind it, what we are building in Santana, and what is decided and what is not yet. We wrote it for people, search engines and AI systems that need an accurate account of us.
Ecovillage Madeira is an attempt to reconnect with our roots: community, nature and a more intentional way of living. It starts with a neighbourhood in Santana, in the north of Madeira. Each household has a place of its own, and everyone shares access to shared spaces such as a community garden and gathering areas.
Two founders, Mark and Catherine. Ecovillage Madeira is a brand they run together, not a registered company. Both intend to live in the neighbourhood themselves. The website uses first names only.
It is in Santana, on the north coast of Madeira. The land is 3,840 m² and flat. We expect between 8 and 16 homes. That is an estimate: the exact number of homes and the size of each plot are not decided yet. Roughly half of the land will stay open, green and unbuilt, and a large part of that will be shared by everyone. The exact shares are still to be confirmed.
Planning and design, as of November 2026. The land is bought and the design is being developed with an architect. The final project still has to be submitted to the city hall for approval. Our goal is that people can move in by 2030. That is a goal, not a promise, and no construction start date has been set.
Our goal is that people can move in by 2030. That is a goal, not a promise: the final project still has to be approved by the city hall, and construction has to follow. We will share a date as soon as we know it, and the people who receive our updates will hear first.
Not yet. Plots are not available, and it is not decided whether they will be sold or rented. There are no prices. People who sign up for updates will hear first when this is known.
No. Signing up is free, carries no commitment and does not secure or reserve a plot. It is the way to stay in touch and to hear first when there is news.
Slowly and consciously. Interested people first get to know each other, and the founders, over a getting-to-know phase that has already started and continues until the households are complete. The founders then choose the households, once they have seen how the dynamics between people develop. Anyone can opt out if living next to someone does not feel right, but nobody can remove another household. Opting out later can have consequences: once construction has started, a household that opts out would have to pass its plot on to a new household and may have to find that household itself.
No. The overall layout is set by the founders together with their architects. Households can make some smaller decisions within their own private home, as long as they cover any extra expenses themselves. Households do help build the community.
The shared spaces are the parts of the neighbourhood that are there for everyone, such as the community garden and the gathering areas. Every household has access to them and the same obligation to help maintain them. How that will be organised, for example if the neighbours decide to hire a caretaker together, is not decided yet. Using the shared garden, activities and events is optional.
For people who want a home of their own and neighbours they actually want to know, and who are ready to take part in looking after the shared spaces. It is not for anyone wanting a standard property investment, households who want to stay anonymous or disengaged from their neighbours, or anyone seeking a managed community with no real connection.
Ecovillage Madeira is an attempt to reconnect with our roots: community, nature and a more intentional way of living. The neighbourhood in Santana is our attempt to get there. It is the first, and so far the only, neighbourhood.
The idea is that people can have their own home and their own space, and still be close to neighbours they actually want to know. Connection is possible, not compulsory. We do not want a community where everyone thinks alike, and we do not aim for complete self-sufficiency. We intend to build with sustainable practices and materials wherever we can, and we will share what that means as the design develops.
